Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay2016
The grapes for this generous wine were grown in the stony soils in the prestigious Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District, on low yielding closely spaced vines. The 2016 growing season experienced a very warm summer and early autumn, which led to a record Grower Degree Days for that period, with welcome intermittent rain. Despite predictions for a later harvest, these conditions proved perfect for ripening, and the fruit was picked in early April, consistent for this variety. We harvested the fruit in good condition on 6th and 7th April at 22.2o Brix.
The grapes were gently crushed, allowing some whole berries to remain intact, and the must transferred into a closed stainless steel tank for 4 days cold soak. Fermentation proceeded with twice daily rummaging for colour, flavour and fine tannin extraction. The resulting wine was racked once and aged for 12 months in a mix of quality French and American 300L hogsheads (29% being new wood). The wine was fined and filtered prior to bottling in June 2017 under screwcap closure.
This delicious single vineyard Merlot sourced from premium grapes is opulent and full-bodied, with a medley of juicy ripe plum, black berry fruits and spicy leather notes. Generously textured and layered, it is ready for immediate enjoyment, or will reward judicious cellaring.
