Tasting Note

This classic red is a superior blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. The grapes were sourced exclusively from our Gimblett Gravel vineyards in Hawkes Bay. After an excellent growing season where hot, dry spells with intermittent rain kept the vines in good health, leading up to a settled autumn and an earlier than usual, compressed harvest, we harvested fruit of excellent quality between 5-17 April 2014 at 22.0o Brix.

Each parcel was cold soaked for 3 days, followed by inoculated fermentation in closed and open-top stainless steel tanks with twice daily pump-overs. Post ferment, the parcels were allowed to macerate on skins for an average of 9 days. When the winemaker deemed the tannins were ideal, the wines were pressed off skins. Still as individual parcels, the wines were transferred to barrel and aged for fourteen months in quality oak barrels (56% French, 44% American) of which 30% was new oak.

Blending took place 17 July 2015 after careful barrel selection, followed by a light egg-white fining, before bottling took place in August 2015 under screwcap.

A rich and luscious wine, this traditional blend exudes intense blackcurrant and brambly blackberry flavours, spice and aniseed notes. Ageing in quality oak has conferred a lovely silky-smooth texture, giving this wine immediate appeal, or for judicious cellaring to reward over the medium term.
