Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay2016
Thegrapes for this generous wine were grown in the stony soils in the prestigiousGimblett Gravels Wine Growing District, on low yielding closely-spaced vines. The2016 growing season experienced a very warm summer and early autumn, which ledto a record Grower Degree Days for that period, with welcome intermittent rain.Despite predictions for a later harvest, these conditions proved perfect forripening, and the fruit was picked in early April, consistent for this variety. We harvested the fruit in good conditionon 6th and 7th April at 22.2o Brix.
Thegrapes were gently crushed, allowing some whole berries to remain intact, andthe must transferred into a closed stainless steel tank for 4 days cold soak. Fermentation proceeded with twice dailyrummaging for colour, flavour and fine tannin extraction. The resulting winewas racked once and aged for 12 months in a mix of quality French and American300L hogsheads (29% being new wood). Thewine was fined and filtered prior to bottling in June 2017 under screwcap closure.
Thisdelicious single vineyard Merlot sourced from premium grapes is opulent andfull-bodied, with a medley of juicy ripe plum, black berry fruits and spicyleather notes. Generously textured andlayered, it is ready for immediate enjoyment, or will reward judiciouscellaring.
