The grapes for this cooler-climate loving variety were sourced from a single vineyard in the Maraekakaho sub-region of Hawkes Bay, which enjoys a temperate climate moderated throughout summer by cooling afternoon breezes. 2015 produced clean, healthy, flavoursome fruit, harvested on 2 April
2015 at 22.4° Brix.
The grapes were pressed on arrival, and the clarified juice sent to seasoned barrels for fermentation, initiated with yeast specially selected for its aromatic expression. The wine remained in barrel to age for ten weeks to further enhance its complexity and mouthfeel. Moving out of barrel, the wine was isinglass fined, and progressed through cold stabilisation, before bottling under screwcap on the 4 August 2015.
This highly appealing Pinot Gris from single vineyard low-yielding vines, is brimming with pear and lychee with soft lemony notes and a hint of gingery spice. The palate is luscious, yet refined, with a very smooth oily texture and a satisfying lingering finish. A beautifully balanced wine, equally enjoyable on its own, or paired with food.
