Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay2014

5 STARS (93 pts)
This fine wine is an appealing blend of the classic Bordeaux varieties, Merlot (60%), Malbec (40%). Grapes were grown in the highly acclaimed Gimblett Gravels wine growing region, and were harvested in optimum condition on 4th and 10th April at 21.4 Brix.
The grapes were gently crushed, cold soaked for four days and fermented in both closed and open top stainless steel tanks, with twice-daily cap management to extract colour, flavour and fine tannin structure. A post-ferment maceration followed over fourteen days. The skins were then pressed off and the wine aged for twelve months in quality oak barrels (67% French and 33% American). The wine was racked once during aging and the blend was composed on 28 May 2015. The wine was lightly fined with egg-white before being bottled on
30 June 2015, under screwcap.
This deliciously approachable Merlot Malbec is silky smooth with mouthfilling blackcurrant and raspberry fruit flavours, intertwined with leather and spice complexity. A delightful wine with instant appeal, it will pair beautifully with lamb or pork dishes.
