Tasting Note

This distinguished Syrah was grown in our 4 hectare Trust Vineyard in the highly acclaimed Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay. The vineyard design embraces high plant density with extremely low yields per vine, in the pursuit of ultra premium wines. The grapes were hand-picked between 18th and 21st April at 20 Brix.

The fruit was destemmed and fermentation initiated using selected yeast in stainless steel, with careful monitoring to maintain a temperature between 28 32 degrees. Cap management entailed twice daily pump-overs, and on completion of fermentation, a 15 day post-ferment maceration on skins followed. The wine was pressed and transferred for aging into 300 litre hogshead barrels (39% French, 61% American of which 25% was new) for fifteen months. The final wine was lightly fined and pad filtered before bottling on 11th October 2011 under Stelvin screwcap.

This refined Syrah presents black berry and white pepper flavours and aromas, complexed with mocha, milk chocolate, and cedar notes. The palate is deliciously smooth and velvety, with a satisfyingly long persistent finish.
