Reserve Merlot Malbec 2008
| Vintage: 2008 Varieties: Merlot and Malbec Area: Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay Winemaker: Tim Preston & Paul Dawick Alcohol: 13.5% Tasting Notes: This fine wine was grown in the renowned Gimblett Gravels, with approximately equal portions sourced from Mere Road & Plateau vineyards. The Merlot and Malbec were harvested between 3-5 April at an average 23.7 brix. The grapes were destemmed, cold soaked for four days and fermented in stainless steel tanks, with twice daily pump overs to extract colour and flavour. They were then macerated for 8 days post-ferment, pressed off their skins and aged for 12 months in quality oak barrels (70% French & 30% American). Bottling took place on 14th July 2009 under screwcap. The final blend (55% Merlot, 45% Malbec) achieves a lovely seamless style with optimal aroma and palate expression. Deep purple-red in colour, this wine exhibits pronounced plum, blackcurrant and violet floral aromas. The palate is full bodied with intense plum and blackberry flavours, intertwined with dried herbs, spicy oak, fine smooth velvety tannins and nicely weighted acidity. An elegantly styled wine with a lovely silky texture. Enjoyable now, this wine will continue to develop and reward cellaring for 5 years.
